FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Youth and Weapons; 25 August 2018

Unalaska, AK, Representing both the Unalaska City School District (UCSD) and Unalaska Department of Public Safety (UDPS) –

UCSD and UDPS are aware of the concern among community members, and especially among students and their parents, about school safety. UDPS wishes to emphasize that the event under investigation occurred several weeks ago, and did not occur on school grounds nor while school is in session.  At no time has there been a report of a weapon at school or a threat to school safety. UDPS is committed to ensuring the safety of our community and is following up on information and evidence obtained yesterday, while working with juvenile authorities regarding possible courses of action for the juveniles in question. UCSD is cooperating and working with UDPS during the course of the investigation, and has placed two students on homebound instruction pending the outcome of the investigation.  Unalaska City School District will continue to work closely with public safety to provide the safest possible learning environment for our students. We appreciate the cooperation we have so far received from parents, students, staff and other community members.
