Weather

There is nothing boring about the weather in Unalaska, and the weather is often a topic of conversation for those who live and work here.  We cherish days when the sky is clear and the sun is shining, whether the mountains are emerald green or covered in pristine snow.  On those bright and beautiful days, we marvel at the natural beauty of our surroundings. Being on an island with the Bering Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean on the south, we have more than our fair share of clouds, wind and rain.  But you simply dress accordingly and go about your life and activities!

Our temperatures are fairly moderate and uniform here on the island, dictated by our marine environment.  The summer temperature range is °41-52 (F), though it does get up into the 70's on beautiful days; and the average winter temperature range is °31-40 (F), but the wind chill factor makes it seem much colder at times. 

We have about 60 inches of precipitation each year and up to 90 inches of snow.  However, with our relatively warm winter temperatures the snow does not typically stay on the ground for long.  In the summer our hills turn a vibrant green and are blanketed with beautiful wildflowers and berries.
