What is the time difference between Unalaska and the "Lower 48?"

Unalaska/Port of Dutch Harbor is in the Alaska Central Time Zone.  We are 4 hours behind Eastern Standard Time and 1 hour behind Pacific Standard Time.

What is the population?

Approximately 4,700 year-round residents reside in Unalaska, and 5,000-10,000 seasonal transient workers.

Will my cell phone work in Unalaska/Port of Dutch Harbor?

In most cases, it will be necessary to contact one of our local service providers to obtain more information on service availability, SIM cards, and/or telephone cards, which are all available for purchase at GCI and TelAlaska.

What kind of transportation is available?

There are several taxi cab companies to choose from or rent a vehicle from North Port Rentals or B.C. Vehicle Rental

Is there public access to the internet?

Yes, the Unalaska Public Library offers free internet access.

How do I get a job on a crab boat?

The majority of the crab vessels that visit the Port of Dutch Harbor are home based in Seattle, Washington, and bring their crew with them.  The City does not have their contact information.  If you are looking for a job in the seafood industry, please refer to the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development website at www.labor.state.ak.us or the Alaska Job Center Network at www.jobs.state.ak.us.  The three major seafood processing companies on the island are Alyeska Seafoods, Unisea, Inc., and Westward Seafoods.  You can find information at their respective websites. 

How do I make a reservation on the Tustumena Ferry?

Reservations are made directly with the Alaska Marine Highway System.  The AMHS telephone number is  (800) 526-6731 and their website is at www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs.

Is there a curfew in Unalaska?

The curfew for children under 16 years of age is from 11:00 pm to 5:00 am.  Some exceptions include children accompanied by a parent or guardian, or children traveling to/from employment or athletic/social/religious/education events.

What does it cost to use the Port facilities?

The City of Unalaska, Port of Dutch Harbor owns and operates five (5) dock facilities, accommodating various size vessels with varying services provided at each facility.  Please see the City of Unalaska Fee Schedule for detailed information or contact the Ports & Harbors office at (907) 581-1254.

What is the depth of your facility at Mean Low Water (MLW)?

Carl Moses Boat Harbor:
         Float A drive down dock: 19-20 feet
         Floats A-C: 20-70 feet

Docks on the spit: 25 feet

Unalaska Marine Center (UMC): 45-50 feet

United States Coast Guard Dock (USCG): 45-50 feet

Where is the DMV and when is it open?

The DMV is located inside the Public Safety building at 29 Safety Way, Unalaska, telephone (907) 581-2833.  Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm and Friday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.
