Aleutian World War II National Historic Area & Visitor Center

Aleutian WWII Visitor Center

The Aleutian World War II National Historic Area and the related Visitor Center, operated by the Ounalashka Corporation, tell the story of the men and women who were stationed in the Aleutians during World War II and the native people who were removed from their homes during the conflict.

The Visitor Center and museum, housed in the renovated aerology building adjacent to the airport, contains many artifacts and photographs of the era.

The historic area is a 134 acre tract of land on Amaknak Island which houses the military ruins of Fort Schwatka, the highest coastal battery ever constructed in the United States.  Remnants of the military occupation are present all over the island, including on top of Mount Ballyhoo, the location of Fort Schwatka.  Materials for a self-guided tour are available at the Visitor Center.
