Volcano Bay Fire

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Volcano Bay Fire; 23 June 2017

Unalaska, AK –

UDPS received two separate reports, on June 17th and again on the 19th, from area pilots who had spotted a tundra fire in the vicinity of Volcano Bay. The reports were forwarded to State authorities, who declined to take any action. In the absence of State involvement and due to considerable community interest, UDPS initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire. Several people have been interviewed and the Ports Department and DPS developed a plan to inspect the site to determine a point of origin. The site inspection, conducted on the 22nd, revealed no determinate point of origin. The investigation is ongoing, and UDPS encourages those with additional information to speak with Investigator Honan, 907-581-1233.

The fire, which appears to have consumed about 100 acres, will be allowed to burn itself out. At this time it does not pose a danger to the residents of Unalaska.
