Voter Qualification

Unalaska Code of Ordinances § 4.04.020 Voter Qualification states:

A person may vote in a city election only if qualified to vote in state elections under AS 15.05.010, has been a resident of the city for 30 days immediately preceding the election, is registered to vote in state elections at a residence address within the city at least 30 days before the city election at which the person seeks to vote, and is not disqualified under Article V of the State Constitution.

Alaska Statute 15.05.010 Voter Qualification states:

A person may vote at any election who

• Is a citizen of the United States;

• Is 18 years of age or older;

• Has been a resident of the state and of the house district in which the person seeks to vote for at least 30 days just before the election; and

• Has registered before the election as required under AS 15.07 and is not registered to vote in another jurisdiction.

Alaska Constitution, Article V, Section 2 Disqualifications states:

• No person may vote who has been convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude unless his civil rights have been restored.

• No person may vote who has been judicially determined to be of unsound mind unless the disability has been removed.

Registering to Vote

You can register to vote in Alaska by going to the State of Alaska Division of Elections website at http://www.elections.alaska.gov/ or by completing the voter registration application in the City Clerk’s Office or the Unalaska Public Library. A copy of the application is attached below. The following information must be provided on the voter registration application:

• Name

• Former name, if your name has changed

• Alaska residence address

• Identifying information - provide at least one of the following

  • Social Security number or last 4 digits

  • Alaska Driver License number

  • Alaska State Identification number

• Date of birth

• Gender

• Out-of-state cancellation (applicants are required to cancel their voter registration in another state when registering to vote in Alaska)

Types of acceptable identification:

• Driver’s License

• State Identification Card

• Birth Certificate

• Passport

• Hunting and Fishing License

• Other current or valid photo ID

When a person may register to vote

There is no required length of residency to register to vote. People who move to Alaska may register immediately as long as they meet voter qualifications specified above and properly complete a registration application. Voting will not be allowed until the 30 day residency requirement is met.

Applicants may register to vote up to 90 days before their 18th birthday. However, to be eligible to vote, they must be 18 years old on or before Election Day.

The voter registration deadline is 30 days before an election.
