Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of:  Maintenance Mechanic I. The position is open until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work to maintain, repair, and upgrade, parks and City facilities. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Maintains parks and facility grounds by mowing, edging, pruning, watering, and applying insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. General building maintenance including painting, janitorial, grounds keeping and other unskilled/semi-skilled trades work.  Will do snow removal for City facilities.  Prepares facilities for park and recreation use.  Assists in repairs on appliances, furniture shop equipment and grounds equipment.  Keeps records of work performed.  Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Knowledge of standard building and system repairs, maintenance, and record keeping.  Must have safe work habits and good "housekeeping" skills.  Ability to use standard methods, procedures, tools and equipment of the maintenance trades to perform general building and system repairs.  Must be able to maintain accurate records.  Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems.  Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.  Must have ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships.  Ability to learn rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and terminology of building maintenance division.  Ability to obtain forklift certification.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Any combination of education and experience that could provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  A valid Alaska Driver’s License is required.  Work may be performed outside in dusty, wet, windy, cold, and snowy environment.  Position requires lifting and physical effort to complete assignments. Position is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.  Will be required to become a member in good standing with IUOE, Local 302 within 30 days of hire.
