Excavation Permit

An Excavation Permit is necessary if you plan to dig on any city-owned property or easement, in the road or within a City right-of-way.

Building Permit

A Building Permit is required “if you erect, construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, improve, remove, convert, or demolish any building or structure within the City…”  (U.C.O. 17.04.030).

Some common construction activities for which you will need to obtain a City Building Permit include, but are not limited to:

  • Any structure greater than 120 square feet in size (storage shed, smokehouse, greenhouse).
  • Any modifications to an existing structure which changes the footprint of the structure (arctic entry, garage, rooms, etc.).
  • Placing or removing a connex on your property.
  • New home.
  • Demolition of a building.
  • Fences over 6 feet in height.
  • ANY changes to a commercial structure.

Effective July 1, 2015, the City of Unalaska, Departments of Public Works and Public Utilities, has implemented a Utility Inspection Deposit as part of the Building Permit and Utility Service Request process. The Utility Inspection Card Deposit amount is $500 for residential construction or $1,000 for commercial construction. Deposits will be refunded upon the completion of service installation inspections by the Department of Public Utilities. A non-refundable fee of $100 will be assessed for any replacement cards required.
