Housing and Community Development

Program Mission: Assisting in the implementation of comprehensive plan goals by providing technical assistance for projects promoting quality of life, housing, and other goals of the comprehensive plan.

What We Do

Community Greenhouse Project. The community greenhouse idea was supported strongly during the development of the last comprehensive plan and the last land use plan. Members of the community expressed their interest in having a greenhouse in the downtown area of Unalaska. The project requires a nonprofit, new or existing, to manage the project and seek funding. The Planning Department will help provide basic assistance to explore interest in the project and provide some general direction. Public meetings will be held to gauge interest and to bring together a group to gather momentum for the project.

Rent Survey Appraisal Report. The Planning Department has been conducting surveys of rental rates and vacancies in the community every three years. The last report was conducted in March 2014. In early 2017 another report will be conducted. The purpose of this report is to determine the average rental rates and vacancies in apartment units throughout Unalaska. This helps establish a baseline for the affordability of housing in the community. This, in turn, helps the City plan for projects to promote affordable housing in accordance with the comprehensive plan. This report is conducted by an outside consultant.
