Position:           Wastewater Operator I
Hiring Wage:   $36.11- $38.31 / hour *proof of certifications (operator II, III) may result in higher pay*

The Unalaska Department of Public Utilities is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Operator I in the Department of Public Utilities. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor. Unalaska, Alaska is a remote coastal community located in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,500 full-time residents with seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position works under the direct supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor by performing a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and technical work in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City wastewater collection and treatment systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge or ability for inspecting, servicing, maintaining, and adjusting equipment to ensure the effective operation of motors, pumps, boilers, filters, blowers, chemical systems, and other equipment used in water treatment plants. Operates valves and gates; starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators and operates all other process equipment to control flow and treatment processes as required. Monitors gauges, meters, and control devices; interprets and records readings; observes variations in operating conditions and test results to determine processing requirements. Maintains records, diagnoses equipment, and operation malfunctions, reports malfunctions, and requisitions supplies to take corrective action. Collects samples and performs standard water treatment tests or analysis as necessary and applies corrective measures to treatment processes to complete routine assignments and to provide utility line locates. Ability and willingness to comply with all City policies and regulations outlined by OSHA and the standards for safety.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED is required.
Combination of education and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Two (2) years of post-secondary education in science, engineering, or a closely related field is preferred.
Two (2) years of experience relating to the operation, construction, repair, and/or maintenance of wastewater collection or treatment systems and equipment preferred.

LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain an Alaska Commercial Driver License Class B with Tanker endorsement within 180 days of hire.
Within 4 years of hire must complete 45 Continuing Education Units of ADEC-approved training.
Within 18 months from the date of hire must obtain the State of Alaska Wastewater Treatment and Wastewater Collection Provisional Certifications (to be an Operator I)
Must be eligible to work in the US; Federal Law requires new hires to complete an Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) Successfully pass a background check which includes, Professional, Criminal, and Reference checks.
Successfully pass a pre-employment drug test.
