The Department of Public Utilities is accepting applications for the position of: Wastewater Operator-in-Training.  Position is open until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This entry apprentice level position performs a variety of unskilled work or labor in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of the City of Unalaska’s wastewater, collection, and treatment systems.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Participates in the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of collection, treatment and electrical systems.  Assists with inspecting, servicing, preventative maintenance and adjusting equipment used in wastewater treatment plants.  Assists with monitoring gauges, meters and control devices; interprets and records readings.  Assists with maintaining records, diagnosing equipment and operations malfunctions, requisitioning supplies and reporting malfunctions.  Collects samples and performs standard wastewater treatment tests or analysis as necessary. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Ability and willingness to comply with OSHA regulations and the standards for safety that have been set by the City of Unalaska. Ability to learn sewer pipe installation, connection and repair. General knowledge of City of Unalaska rules, regulations, and policies regarding wastewater system operations.  Ability to operate some wastewater system equipment and conduct routine tests of samples.  Ability to take accurate readings and keep operational records.  Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  High school diploma or equivalent. Three (3) months of related experience preferred. Other equivalent combination of education and experience that could provide the knowledge, skills, abilities and certification required will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:      Valid Alaska driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days or prior to driving a City vehicle.  Current certifications at the OIT level in both Wastewater Treatment and Collection preferred. Appointment may be contingent on applicant obtaining specific certifications by a date specified at the time of hire. Position is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing.
