The Department of Public Utilities is accepting applications for the position of TEMPORARY SOLID WASTE OPERATOR 1.  Position is open until for applications until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This is an entry-level position which, under direct supervision of the Solid Waste Operations Supervisor, performs a variety of unskilled and skilled manual tasks at the solid waste facility.  Working outside and in unheated structures with offensive odors is necessary, along with the physical effort inherent in the work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Screens solid waste, Litter pick-up, squeegees and washes floors, washes equipment and cleans drains.  Assists with recycling, household hazardous waste and other programs as needed, directs traffic to unloading areas, serves members of the public who access the landfill and other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:   Ability to perform light maintenance, care for tools, follow verbal and written instructions and work from sketches and drawings, the ability to use hand and power tools and the ability to serve the public efficiently and in a friendly manner. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  High school diploma or equivalent. One year of labor experience assisting skilled workers.  Other combinations of education and experience which could provide knowledge, skills, abilities and certification listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  A valid Alaska Driver's License required.  Employee is frequently exposed to offensive odors and noise and is occasionally exposed to hazardous materials.  As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis. Willingness to work outside in inclement weather.  Sometimes may be required to work in darkness.  All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment. Will be required to obtain union status within 30 days from date of hire.

Union Position: $25.53 per hour
Temporary Full Time Position; may last 3-6 months
