Position: Temporary Solid Waste Operator I
Salary: [Union Position Step 1- 3] $26.05 - $27.10 Hourly

The Unalaska Department of Public Utilities is accepting applications for the position of Temporary Solid Waste Operator I located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor. Unalaska, Alaska is a coastal community located in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,000 full-time residents with seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is an entry-level position which, under direct supervision of the Solid Waste Operations Supervisor, performs a variety of unskilled and skilled manual tasks at the solid waste facility.  Working outside and in unheated structures with offensive odors is necessary, along with the physical effort inherent in the work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Ability to perform light maintenance, care for tools, follow verbal and written instructions and work from sketches and drawings, the ability to use hand and power tools and the ability to serve the public efficiently and in a friendly manner. Knowledge of or ability to learn the solid waste process of screening, and utilization of specific equipment and safety and knowledge with household hazardous waste and other programs as needed. Be comfortable and exposed to offensive odors and noise and working with hazardous materials.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
One year of labor experience assisting skilled workers preferred. 
Other combinations of education and experience which could provide knowledge, skills, abilities and certification listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing i.e. Criminal background and History and random drug testing.
Ability to work outside in inclement weather and darkness.
Maintain active and current certifications and licensing for the duration of employment.
