POSITION:                      Temporary Solid Waste Operator 1 (Up to 6 months)
Hiring Wage:                   $26.83 – $28.47 hour

The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Temporary Solid Waste Operator I in the Department of Public Utilities.  Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This is an entry-level position which, under direct supervision of the Solid Waste Operations Supervisor, performs a variety of unskilled and skilled manual tasks at the solid waste facility.  Working outside and in unheated structures with offensive odors is necessary, along with the physical effort inherent in the work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Assist in light maintenance, care for tools, follow verbal and written instructions and work from sketches and drawings, the ability to use or assist hand and power tools and the ability to serve the public efficiently and in a friendly manner.  Knowledge of or ability to learn the solid waste process of screening, and utilization of specific equipment and safety and knowledge with household hazardous waste and other programs as needed.  Be comfortable and exposed to offensive odors and noise and working with hazardous materials.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED required
One year of labor experience assisting skilled workers preferred
Other combinations of education and experience which could provide knowledge, skills, abilities and certification listed will be evaluated on an individual basis

LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years of age
Required to have, or be able to obtain an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire
Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing i.e. criminal background and work history and a drug test
Must be eligible to work in the US; meet employment requirement by Federal Law; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9)
Ability to work outside in adverse weather conditions and darkness
Ability to work nontraditional hours if necessary
