The Department of Parks, Culture & Recreation is accepting applications for the following position of: Recreation Program Coordinator Youth Programing.  Position is open for applications until 5:00 pm on August 4, 2017.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position works under the direct supervision of the Recreation Manager. Performs routine and complex administrative work in planning, organizing, coordinating of range of recreation programs. This position is responsible for developing programming for youths of all ages. Specifically, this position seeks someone with a strong background in programming for elementary-aged children, primarily to lead After School Program (PCR 360) and KinderCamp.  Typical schedule is Mondays through Fridays daytime hours with occasional evenings and weekends.  Individuals with an early childhood education are strongly encouraged to apply. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Plans, develops and implements after school and specialty camp recreation programs for school-age children. Determines materials, supplies, facility, supervision and instruction needs for the daily operation of afterschool programs and coordinates with other PCR staff.  Provides supervision, instruction, guidance and discipline for youth participating in these programs. Responsible for ensuring programs are performed within budget and assures the most effective and efficient use of funds, facilities and time.  Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.  Ability to maintain required records associated with programs.  Knowledge of children’s recreational activities.  Ability to work with a variety of age groups and cultures. Effective leadership and good communication and interactive skills. Ability to handle potentially sensitive incidents. Knowledge of program policies, health and safety requirements and emergency procedures. Knowledge of basic arithmetic and office practices and procedures. Ability to operate office equipment. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED. One (1) year of recreation program planning or experience in early childhood programs, and a willingness to acquire additional skills and training. Four (4) years of college with a degree in recreation or early childhood development preferred. 12 semester hours of college credit in early childhood development, child development or child psychology or the equivalent preferred.  Other combination of education and experience that could provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis. 

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: A valid Alaska driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.  Ability to obtain first aid and CPR certification.  Must work flexible hours including evenings and weekends. Occasionally the position will require working in other recreation programs and outdoors with program participants.  As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work, submit to a criminal history background, fingerprint check and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice. Position is subject to pre-employment, post-offer criminal investigation as defined by Alaska Statute 12.62.
