The Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of: MAINTENANCE MECHANIC CHIEF.  Position is open for applications until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This supervisory position is responsible for managing staff, including heavy equipment and light equipment mechanics and overall vehicle and equipment maintenance for the City of Unalaska.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Schedule, coordinate and keep records for vehicles and equipment.  Perform vehicle and equipment maintenance and safety inspections.  Supervise work and training.  Order parts and materials.  Vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.  Budget preparation and administration.  Directs, supervises and oversees personnel activities.  Makes recommendations on vehicle maintenance procedures and policies.  Monitors inventory control of supplies used in conjunction with Supply division records.  Prepares reports, presents briefings to supervisors and conducts correspondence related to work.  Responsible for interviewing and hiring staff. Plans and implements a training program to keep employees in compliance with OSHA regulations and the standards for safety that have been set by the City of Unalaska.  Other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Must be knowledgeable and trained in both gas and diesel vehicle and equipment maintenance.  Must be proficient at scheduling and maintaining records manually and on a computer.  Knowledge of DDC control systems is desirable. Must be able to solve vehicle and equipment repair problems.  Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.  Ability to read blueprints.  Ability to research and troubleshoot equipment issues through the use of modern technology.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:   High school diploma or equivalent.  Minimum five (5) years experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance.   Minimum three (3) years experience supervisory experience desired.  Other combinations of education and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis. Should be skilled in the use of computers including Microsoft Office software.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Position subject to pre-employment and random substance abuse testing.  CDL Class B license is required.  Must be able to work under adverse conditions and odd hours.
