Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of:  LIGHT EQUIPMENT MECHANIC.  This position is open for applications until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Under moderate supervision, from the Maintenance Mechanic Chief, repair and maintain gas vehicles and equipment and complete light maintenance on diesel equipment.  Majority of work is in an equipment shop.  May be required to do service work on equipment out-of-doors, and in bad weather. 
 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Repair and maintains gas powered equipment.  Light maintenance and servicing on diesel equipment. Repair tires.  In-field fueling and greasing of equipment with service truck.  Other related duties.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Working knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of gas powered engines, and light equipment mechanical and electrical systems. Knowledge of the operation of motorized vehicles such as tractors, trucks, bulldozers, backhoes and front -end loaders preferred.  Must be able to troubleshoot maintenance problems and to explain and discuss resolution.  Must be able to run diagnostic equipment and read results.  
 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum two years experience in vehicle repair industry.  Vocational training in automotive repair may be substituted. Other combinations of education and experience which could provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.

 

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  A valid Alaska Class B CDL is required.  Occasional emergency or non-traditional work hours may be necessary.  As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.  Will be required to become a member in good standing with IUOE, Local 302 within 30 days of hire.
