The Department of Parks, Culture and Recreation is accepting applications for the position of LIFEGUARD I. Two (2) positions are available. Positions are open until filled.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for monitoring and supervising the activities of patrons of the Aquatics Center, and providing lifesaving services as required, as well as assisting with providing for the safe use of the pool facility.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Patron surveillance and safety of Aquatics Center guests. Responds effectively to emergency situations and administers needed CPR, oxygen, AED and first aid to victims; observe and enforce Aquatics Center rules and regulations; apply preventative lifeguard techniques and surveillance; communicate emergency request to the Aquatics Center Manager, police, or EMS personnel. Report and repair unsafe conditions and equipment to the Aquatics Center Manager; maintain a safe and sanitary facility; continually inspect and clean facility and equipment; test and record the water chemistry when certified. Provide a variety of information to the public regarding Aquatics Center operations and programs; respond to questions; answer phone; collect pool admissions and program registrations using RecTrac; open, closes, locks and unlocks center as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Basic knowledge and skills of life-guarding techniques. Ability to understand swimming techniques. Knowledge of or ability to learn pool operations, and the City of Unalaska’s Aquatics Center’s policies and procedures. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions. Ability to enforce policies and regulations in a customer service environment. Must be able to work weekend and evening shifts.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must have valid American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), and oxygen provider. Ability to learn and perform basic pool chemistry operations.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Alaska Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 90 days. Position is subject to pre-employment criminal investigation as defined by Alaska Statute 12.62. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice. All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
