The Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of: HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC. This position is open for applications until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This journey level position, under minimal supervision from the Vehicle Maintenance Crew Chief, is responsible for the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel powered equipment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Repair and maintain gas and diesel powered equipment.  Duties include welding, fabrication and hard facing.  Service City of Unalaska equipment including changing oil and tire repair.  Other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Working knowledge of repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines and the tools and equipment used.  Ability to read schematic diagrams and diagnostic manuals.  Ability to correctly troubleshoot maintenance problems.  Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.  Knowledge of safe working habits in an equipment repair environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  High School diploma or GED certificate required. Minimum of four years as an equipment mechanic.  Vocational training in diesel or hydraulic repair is preferred.  Welding and fabrication experience also preferred.  Other combinations of education and experience that would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Position subject to pre-employment and random substance abuse testing.  CDL, Class “B,” is required.  This position requires work in an environment where the conditions are inherent to an industrial setting, outside in adverse weather, and may require work during non-traditional hours.
