POSITION: HARBOR OFFICER
SALARY: $26.18 to $27.78/ hour
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Harbor Officer in the Department of Ports and Harbors. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska, is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Harbormaster, this position monitors Port & Harbor Facilities, terminal operations, and activities by following City and Departmental Policies as well as State and Federal regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: The ability to make decisions without direct intervention of a supervisor. The successful applicant must possess the knowledge or ability to acquire the skills necessary to perform port-related duties, such as line handling, knots training, cold water extraction techniques, and hypothermia treatment, as they pertain to the maritime industry. Must also demonstrate competency in the care and upkeep of port facilities. This includes performing routine dock maintenance tasks such as inspecting and repairing cleats, ladders, fendering, bollards, catwalks, waterlines, and signage; removing debris and ice buildup; assisting with snow removal; and reporting structural concerns. Responsible for general housekeeping to ensure port facilities are clean, safe, and operational for all users. This includes maintaining public areas, equipment storage, workspaces, and assigned vehicles to a high standard of cleanliness and readiness. A successful applicant will have knowledge of maritime regulations and terminology. Must have the ability to work with the public and retain a professional demeanor in confrontational situations. The applicant must have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, as well as maintain confidentiality. They must also use general office equipment, including a VHF radio.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
• A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Basic electrical and/or mechanical experience preferred.
• Medium equipment operation experience, such as a backhoe and a loader, preferred.
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
• CPR, First Aid and AED
• Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of hire.
• Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing, i.e., criminal background, work history, and random drug testing.
• Must be eligible to work in the US; meet employment requirements by Federal Law; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9).
