Department of Public Safety is accepting applications for the position of:  CORRECTIONS OFFICER.  Position is open for applications until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This position, under direct supervision from the Deputy Chief and Corrections Sergeant, maintains the health and security of inmates and staff.  This position ensures all individuals held in Unalaska Jail either on criminal charges or protective custody receive those rights and care as mandated by State and Federal law.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Maintains the health and security of inmates to include showers, meals, dispensing medications, and visits, etc.  Responsible for coordinating and preparing inmates for scheduled court appearances.  Maintains, cleans and sanitizes corrections area including cells and shower.  Responsible for laundering inmate bedding, clothing, towels, etc.  Maintains proper written records of inmates and activities will include: report writing, fingerprinting, billing, court documents, bail money, etc.  Conduct thorough searches of prisoners, visitors, and cells for prohibited items.  Apply restraint techniques to violent prisoners. Possibility of exposure to blood-borne pathogens, diseases, or parasites.  Position can be subjected to extremely volatile or violent behavior. Firearms are present in the environment.   

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of or the ability to learn State statutes, policies and procedures as they relate to jail functions.  Have the ability to communicate fluently in English (verbally and in writing).  Possess ability to work effectively with the public in a courteous, efficient, and professional manner.  Have ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with City of Unalaska staff, the public, vendors and agencies.  Have strong written and oral communication skills, problem-solving skills, and interpersonal skills.  Have ability to maintain professionalism under pressure. Must possess proven ability to maintain confidentiality.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  High school diploma or G.E.D.  Minimum one year of experience in position requiring public contact.  Valid Alaska Drivers License.  Ability to obtain APSC Basic Municipal Corrections Officer Certification within one year of hire.  Current First Aid and CPR cards preferred. 

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  An extensive background check will be conducted, including a criminal records check and fingerprints.  Successful completion of physical and psychological testing post offer are required.  No misdemeanor convictions in the last 3 years. No domestic violence related misdemeanor convictions and no illegal drug use in the past 5 years.  Must be at least 21 years of age.  Once employed must be certified by National Sheriffs Association; and obtain First Aid and CPR cards. Employees are required to work rotating shifts.  As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work.
