POSITION:                 UTILITY LINEMAN
Hiring Wage:               $43.80 – $46.46 / hour (Step 1 -3)

The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Utility Lineman in the Department of Public Utilities. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position functions as a journeyman level lineman who, under direct supervision from the Utility Lineman Chief; is responsible for ensuring electricity is delivered to the City of Unalaska consumers. Some examples of work performed but not limited to are, Installs and repairs electrical transmission, distribution lines, secondary feeders and service drops. Inspects electrical systems and equipment.  Installs and repairs transformers, primary and secondary vaults, switching stations, section cans, and primary and secondary underground lines. Install and pull conductors through electrical conduit.  Performs cable splices and terminations on wire and cables up to 34,500 volts.  Tests continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard instruments.  Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment of the electrical trade.  Must have ability to work from sketches, blueprints and manuals.  Have ability to operate mechanized equipment, and make mathematical computations and ability to work under time constraints.  Working knowledge of high voltage testers, pin pointers, high pot machines, meggers, and phase rotation meters.   Have ability to read one-line diagrams, blueprints and schematics to accomplish duties.  Must possess ability to follow standard safety practices. Must have excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to maintain productive working relationships.
 EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Completion of a four-year electrical apprentice program is required.
LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Journeyman Lineman Certificate of Fitness from the State of Alaska or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.
Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska CDL Class “B” within 90 days of hire.
Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing i.e. criminal background and work history and a drug test. Subject to future random testing without notice.
Must be eligible to work in the US; meet employment requirement by Federal Law; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9).
Willingness to work outside and around high voltage is required.
Ability to work nontraditional hours if necessary.
Maintain active and current certifications and licensing for the duration of employment.
