Electric Power Generation Division

Unalaska Powerhouse Building

The City of Unalaska power generation division is dedicated to producing electrical power in the safest and most economical way possible.  We work around the clock to provide needed power to the island's industry and community, fueling the #1 Fishing Port in the United States.

The City of Unalaska generates electricity at two diesel powered generating plants, with a total installed capacity of 17.6 megawatts.  A new, state-of-the-art powerhouse was constructed in 2010, right next to the powerhouse that was built by the military during WWII.  The new powerhouse has an installed capacity of 16.6 megawatts.  A smaller plant located in Unalaska Valley has an installed capacity of 1 megawatt.

The activities of the power generation division are carried out with 8 full-time employees.

The City of Unalaska holds two Title V permits from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation:  #215TVP01 and #216GP101.  The authority to provide Electric service is defined in the Alaska Public Utilities Commission “Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity #106.”
