POSITION: Medium Equipment Operator
SALARY: $39.32-$41.71 /Hourly (effective July 1, 2023)
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Medium Equipment Operator for the Department of Public Utilities. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is an equipment operator who, under the direct supervision of a Utility Division Supervisor, operates medium equipment to maintain, upgrade, and construct the City’s roads, water lines, sewer lines, electrical conduit, and drainage systems.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Operates a variety of equipment up to 30,000 lbs. GVW as outlined in Article 17.2 of the IUOE Local 302 Contract between the City of Unalaska and the Department of Public Works and Public Utilities. Installs water lines, culverts, conduits, and drainage ditches. Spotter in ditches, using shovel to expose and clear utilities. Use of hand compactor and power tools. Install and maintain traffic control devices, i.e. signs, delineators, hazard markers, snow poles, etc. Repair and maintain tire chains, hand tools, power tools, barricades, lights, etc. Assists Utility crews with infrastructure installs and maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Must have ability and willingness to comply with OSHA regulations and the standards for safety that have been set by the City of Unalaska.
Ability to obtain forklift certification.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Ability to learn rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and terminology used in Public Utilities.
Ability to operate medium size equipment at the journeyman level.
Ability to make minor adjustment and repairs to equipment.
Ability to use hand and fixed levels to establish grades.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.
Good interpersonal and problem solving skills preferred.
Ability to cut ditches and slopes to grade with construction machinery.
Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with City of Unalaska staff, the public, vendors, and agencies.
Ability to read and understand drawings and illustration.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of three years experience on medium size road or utility construction/maintenance equipment preferred.
Knowledge of standard road construction and maintenance practices.
Knowledge of standard safety practices.
Other equivalent combination of experience and education which could be substituted for the necessary. Knowledge, skills, abilities, and certifications will be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years of age
High school diploma or GED
Valid Alaska CDL, class “A” with “N” endorsement required
Forklift certification or ability to obtain one
Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing i.e. Criminal background and History and future periodic random drug testing
Must be eligible to work in the US; requirements by Federal Law if hired must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9)

If applicable, lump sum relocation assistance (taxable) maximum of $7,000 plus airfare for the employee and one family member (refer to IUOE CBA for details)
Travel allowance $2,000 every year on your date of hire after 1st year of employment
Longevity bonus of $2,000 beginning on the third (3rd) year anniversary
Education Incentive per month dependent on degree, Associate $200, BA $300, Master $400
