The Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT II.  This position is open for applications until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This position, under the direct supervision of the Office Manager, provides administrative support and customer service for the Department of Public Works and Public Utilities.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Serve as receptionist for the Departments of Public Works and Public Utilities.  Duties include answering and transferring telephone calls, taking messages, assisting co-workers and the public.  Monitor radio communications and respond when necessary.  Maintain department files for DPU and DPW; maintain file index. Responsible for processing and/or preparing and maintaining logs for department mail.  Prepare and reconcile Limited Purchase Orders and Material Requisition Orders.  Responsible for processing work orders and work requests and reconciliation of non-vehicle work orders. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.  Must have ability to work effectively, and establish and maintain productive working relationships with the public, Unalaska officials, and staff.   Must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills.  Ability to learn, understand, and apply multiple department procedures and tasks.  Must have ability to maintain professionalism under pressure.  Knowledge of office practices and procedures.  Ability to use basic office equipment.  Knowledge of general record keeping and filing systems.  Must be proficient in a Windows environment including: Word, Excel, Outlook, and database software.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  High school diploma or equivalent.  One year of professional office experience.  Previous bookkeeping experience in a public sector environment, preferred. Other combinations of education and experience that could provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work.  A valid Alaska Driver License or ability to obtain one within 30 days and prior to operating any City vehicle is required.  Will be required to obtain membership with IUOE Local 302 within 30 days of hire.
