Position: Lifeguard I
Salary: [Non Union] $14.21 Hourly
The Unalaska Department of Parks, Culture & Recreation is accepting applications for the position of Lifeguard I, located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor. Unalaska, Alaska is a coastal community located in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,000 full-time residents with season influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for monitoring and supervising the activities of patrons of the Aquatics Center. Must be able to respond effectively to emergency situations and administers needed CPR, oxygen, AED and first aid to victims. Maintain a safe and sanitary facility; continually inspect and clean facility and equipment and test and record the water chemistry. Provide a variety of information to the public regarding Aquatics Center operations and programs; respond to questions; answer phone; collect pool admissions using RecTrac; open, close, lock and unlock center as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: The successful candidate will have a demonstrated job history that includes but not limited to the follow:
Basic knowledge and skills of life-guarding techniques.
Ability to understand swimming techniques.
Knowledge of or ability to learn pool operations, and the City of Unalaska’s Aquatics Center’s policies and procedures
Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
Ability to enforce policies and regulations in a customer service environment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Must have valid certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), and oxygen provider.
Ability to learn and perform basic pool chemistry operations
LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have or ability to obtain an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire
Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends with possible hours during the week for various other programs
Ability to work outdoors with participants and in an environment of smell of chorine and/or cleaning supplies;
Must be eligible to work in the US; requirement by Federal Law if hired must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9)
Successfully pass background test which includes, Criminal background, Professional and Reference check
Successfully pass a pre-employment drug test as well as future periodic random testing.
