Position: Wastewater Operator
Wage: [Union Position Hiring range - Step 1-3] $32.83 – 34.83 / hour
*can result in higher starting pay if proof of certifications (operator II, III)
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Operator in the Department of Public Utilities. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position works under the direct supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor by performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled and technical work in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of City wastewater collection and treatment systems.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge or ability for inspecting, servicing, preventative maintenance and adjusting equipment to ensure effective operation of motors, pumps, boilers, filters, blowers, chemical systems and other equipment usedin water treatment plants. Operates valves and gates; starts and stops pumps, engines and generators; and operates all other process equipment to control flow and treatment processes as may be required. Monitors gauges, meters, and control devices;interprets and records readings; observes variations in operating conditions and test results to determine processing requirements. Maintains records, diagnoses equipment and operations malfunctions, requisitions supplies and reports malfunctions to obtain corrective action. Collects samples and performs standard water treatment tests or analysis as necessary, and applies corrective measures to treatment processes to complete routine assignment and provide utility line locates. Ability and willingness to comply with all City policies and regulations outlined by OSHA and the standards for safety.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
High school diploma and or GED required; Combination of education and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis
Two (2) years post-secondary education in science, engineering or a closely related field preferred.
Two (2) years of experience relating to operation, construction, repair and/or maintenance of waste water collection or treatment systems and equipment preferred.
LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have or ability to obtain an Alaska Commercial Drivers License Class B with Tanker endorsement within 180 days of hire.
Required 45 Continuing Education Units of ADEC approved training within 4 years of hire.
Required to obtain within 18 months from date of hire the State of Alaska Wastewater Treatment and Wastewater Collection
Provisional Certifications (to be an Operator I)
Must be eligible to work in the US; requirement by Federal Law if hired must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9)
Successfully pass background test which includes, Criminal background, Professional and Reference check.
Successfully pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test
BENEFITS:
Travel allowance $2,000 every year on your date of hire.
If applicable, Moving expense up to $5,000 plus one (1) way airfare including one (1) dependent (refer to IUOE for details)
Medical premium 100% employer paid (employee & dependents)
Paid Time Off starting at 8 hours per pay period and accrual of Floating Holidays.
Eligible for PERS retirement.
Up to 100% Tuition reimbursement (must be taken while employed; refer to Title II for details)
