Department of Finance is accepting applications for the position of FULL-TIME SENIOR ACCOUNTANT. Position is open until filled.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Responsible for performing work and supervising departmental staff in classification and verification of accounting transactions, accounts maintenance, posting transactions and adjustments, accounts record keeping, accounts reconciliation, analysis of accounting data, and report preparation. Review and analyze accounts, financial statements, internal controls and fiscal procedures.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Supervises, directs, and coordinates staff accounting operations in payroll and accounts payable. Maintains subsidiary ledgers and reconciles subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger. Performs tests of accounting records to verify accuracy, completeness and propriety; assists in data entry and verification of accuracy; reconciles balance sheet accounts for accuracy and completeness; assists with the preparation of year-end work papers and audit schedules. Prepares budgetary back-up schedules and maintains budget data. Reviews and prepares accounting reports for management and outside agencies as required. Conducts employee training; with assistance from Human resources, prepares performance evaluations, initiates and administers personnel and disciplinary actions, and resolves grievances for direct reports.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of generally accepted accounting theories, principles, policies, practices, terminology, and government accounting. Knowledge of techniques and methods used in finding errors in accounting. Ability to analyze financial records in ascertaining facts, instruct and supervise subordinate employees, maintain a professional attitude under stress, meet deadlines, and determine work priorities. Knowledge of principles and practices of employment supervision, including employee development, labor contract requirements, performance evaluations, and progressive discipline. Knowledge of office practices, procedures and general office equipment. Ability to maintain productive relationships with co-workers, other departments, vendors, and contractors.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A 2 year degree in accounting or finance from an accredited college or university required. Minimum 3 years of professional accounting or finance experience required. Minimum 2 years supervisory experience required. Minimum 2 years experience in general accounting, accounts payable, payroll required. Preferred qualifications: 4 year degree in accounting or finance; 5 or more years professional general accounting experience, including at least 2 years supervisory experience; 2 or more years governmental accounting experience. Must be proficient in a Windows environment, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Other combinations of education and/or experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities may be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Position is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening and background check. Valid Alaska Drivers License or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
