The Department of Parks, Culture and Recreation is accepting applications for the position of: Part-time LIBRARY ASSISTANT. Position is open for applications until filled.
General Description: This position under direct supervision from the Librarian provides routine clerical and library work in answering phones, circulation of library materials, collection of library fines, providing customer assistance, library collection development, library program planning, cash handling, and data processing.
Examples of Work: Assist patrons in locating materials and in using the library. Check library materials in and out. Shelve books, magazines and other materials. Maintain necessary operating records. Accept and process passport applications. Assist in maintaining library collections and facilities, including selection of library materials for purchase and discard, processing of new materials, and light cleaning/tidying. Notarize documents for patrons. Plan and present programs to the public. Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answer phones, run errands, make arrangements for use of library facilities, set up tables and chairs for classes. Cross train at Community Center for front desk duties for occasional work. Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Verbal and written communication skills. Working knowledge of office practices and procedures. Ability to use basic office equipment. Dedication to maintaining confidentiality of library patron records. Knowledge of and ability to accurately maintain record keeping and filing systems. Must be proficient in a Windows environment. Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience working in a professional office and with the public. Two or more years experience working in a professional office, providing public service, or previous library experience preferred. Other combination of education and experience which could provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Licenses and Special Requirements: Valid Alaska driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment and prior to operating a City owned vehicle. Hold current Notary Certificate or pass Notary exam within 90 days of employment. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test and a background check prior to beginning work. Employee will be required to work flexible hours. Position is subject to pre-employment, post-offer criminal investigation as defined by Alaska Statute 12.62. Must become a member in good standing with IUOE Local 302, within 30 days of hire.
