Department of Public Utilities is accepting applications for the position of Lineman Apprentice. Position is open until 5:00pm on Monday, May 21, 2018
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position functions as a Lineman Apprentice, and is responsible for completing all studies deemed necessary to obtain a Lineman certificate from the State of Alaska and assisting Utility Lineman in ensuring electrical service is delivered to the City of Unalaska consumers.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Under supervision, installs and repairs electrical transmission, distribution lines and feeders through the system; performs necessary instrumentation and meter installation. Inspects electrical systems and equipment to detect and correct faulty or worn out parts; installs and repairs secondary feeders and service drops to electrical consumers; measures, cuts bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit using such tools as hacksaws, pipe threaders, conduit benders and PCV heaters; performs cable splices and terminations on wire and cables up to 34,500 volts; tests continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard instruments.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of standard safety practices. Must be able to understand verbal instructions and directions for job accomplishment and safety. Must be able to read and understand drawings and illustrations. Ability to operate light duty equipment. Must be able to manipulate hand tools, objects, and equipment controls. Must be able to solve routine problems communicate problems to co-workers and supervisor. Will work outside in dusty, windy, wet, cold, and snowy environment. Will work in high noise and vibration environment. Will use materials such as paint and cleaners. Ability to work under time constraints in potentially dangerous environments to manage simultaneous tasks and projects, and to meet multiple deadlines. Occasional emergency or non-traditional work hours may be necessary.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED. Must be 18 years of age. Must be able to obtain State of Alaska, Journeyman Lineman’s Certificate of Fitness 6 months after completion of 4 year apprentice program.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess or obtain an Alaska State CDL operator’s license with no DWI charges filed within previous three years. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice. All required certifications or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment. Must become a member in good standing of IUOE Local 302 within 30 days of hire.
