Position: LIGHT EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Hiring Wage: $36.11-$38.31/ hour [non-exempt]
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Light Equipment Operator in the Department of Public Works. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is an equipment operator who, under the direction of the Roads Chief, operates light equipment to maintain, upgrade and construct the City's streets, roads, bike trails and drainage systems.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Must have a working knowledge of standard road construction and maintenance practices and problem solve. Must be able and willing to operate a variety of equipment up to 26,000 lbs. Must assist other operators as a spotter in ditches and use hand and power tools to expose clear and re-bed utilities. Must be able to assist in the maintenance and repair of gravel roads, asphalt pavements, markings, wooden bridges, fences, ground, etc. Ability to clean, service and make minor repairs to machinery, vehicles, hand operate hand and power tools, barricades, lights, tire chains, etc. Must comply, understand and apply OSHA regulations and standards of safety to the job and have the ability to learn and follow rules, regulations policies, procedures drawings, illustrations, and terminology in the Public Works Roads Division. Capable of working with a team and individually and maintaining productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Two (2) years of experience on medium size road or utility construction/ maintenance equipment required
Combination of education and experience that could provide knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
***Must*** have an Alaska CDL, class “A” with “N” endorsement at time of hire OR Alaska CDL, class "B" with the ability to obtain a class "A" within six months of employment.
Must have medical certification and comply with yearly reviews - CDL holders only
All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment
Able to work outside in all types of weather including dust, wind, rain, cold, snow, and darkness
Able to work in an environment of noise, vibrating conditions, and in unheated workstations
The position is on 24 hours per day for emergency purposes and must be able to work occasional emergency or non-traditional work hours as required
Must be eligible to work in the US; requirement by Federal Law if hired must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9)
Successfully pass background test which includes, Criminal background, Professional and Reference check
Successfully pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and random testing without advance notice
BENEFITS:
If applicable, lump sum relocation assistance (taxable) maximum of $7,000 plus airfare for the employee and one family member
Travel allowance $2,000 every year on your date of hire after 1st year of employment
Longevity bonus of $2,000 beginning on the third (3rd) year anniversary
