Department of Public Works, Division of Vehicle Maintenance is accepting applications for the position of Light Equipment Mechanic – Oiler. The position is open for applications until December 24, 2018
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Maintenance Mechanic Chief, will provide daily maintenance of heavy and light equipment in the field. Duties will include fueling, greasing, oil changes, tire repair, and other minor repairs as needed.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Fueling, greasing, changing oil, and other scheduled maintenance of various vehicles and construction and maintenance equipment. Repair small and large tires for equipment and vehicles. Repair and maintain light equipment. Other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must have the ability and willingness to comply with OSHA regulations and the standards for safety that have been set by the City of Unalaska. Have working knowledge of repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems for motor vehicles and various construction and maintenance equipment. Possess ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships and professionalism. Have knowledge of or the ability to learn rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and terminology used in a vehicle maintenance division. Must be able to effectively read and interpret schematic diagrams and manuals. To perform duties, must be able to effectively operate diagnostic equipment. Ability to use and manipulate hand and power tools, objects, and equipment controls safely and efficiently. Have the ability to operate various types of construction/maintenance equipment for the purpose of moving equipment for needed repairs and scheduled maintenance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum two years maintaining/servicing vehicles, and construction and maintenance equipment. Any combination of education and experience that could provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed will be evaluated on and individual basis.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Alaska CDL “B” endorsement. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice. Majority of work is outside, often in adverse weather. Some work will be done in equipment shop with noise and odors. Emergency or non-traditional work hours may be necessary. Will be required to become a member in good standing with IUOE, Local 302 within 30 days of hire.
NOTICE: Appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of the applicant’s Alaska Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) and a current copy of his/her Department of motor vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaskan driver’s license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant.
