POSITION: Light Equipment Mechanic
SALARY: $37.19 – $39.46/hourly [Union Position Hiring range - Step 1-3]
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Light Equipment Mechanic position. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.
The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all employee tasks in this classification. The duties shown are designed to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under moderate supervision from the Maintenance Mechanic Chief, the position’s duties include repairing and maintaining gas vehicles and equipment, changing tires, in-field fueling and greasing equipment with service trucks, and completing light maintenance on diesel equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used to repair and maintain gas-powered engines and light equipment mechanical and electrical systems.
Knowledge of the operation of motorized vehicles such as tractors, trucks, bulldozers, backhoes, and front-end loaders preferred.
Must be able to troubleshoot maintenance problems and to explain and discuss resolution.
Must be able to run diagnostic equipment and read results.
Must be able to lift, push, and pull 100 pounds and carry 76 pounds regularly.
Must demonstrate knowledge of safe work habits in an equipment/shop environment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum two (2) years experience in the vehicle repair industry required.
Vocational training in automotive repair is preferred.
Other combination of experience that is relevant to perform the essential functions of the position will be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire and obtain CDL Class B.
Must be eligible to work in the US; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9) as required by Federal law.
Successfully pass a background test, which includes criminal background, professional, and reference checks.
Successfully pass a pre-employment drug test.
Ability to work in conditions inherent to an industrial environment with loud noise.
Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
Ability to work nontraditional hours if necessary.
Maintain active and current certifications and licensing for the duration of employment.
