Position: Library Assistant, On-Call – Up to 6 months
Wage: [Non-exempt] $20.25 Hourly

The Unalaska Department of Parks, Culture and Recreation is accepting applications for the position of: LIBRARY ASSISTANT, ON-CALL.

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position, under direct supervision from the City Librarian, provides on-call routine clerical and library work in answering phones, receiving patrons, circulation of library materials, collection of library fines, providing customer assistance, cash handling, and data processing. Please note that this is an on-call position with no guaranteed hours. The person in this position will work on-call hours when needed, and shifts may sometimes be requested on short notice. Hours will not exceed 25 in any given week.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Assist patrons in locating materials and in using the library. Check library materials in and out. Answer reference questions. Shelve books, magazines and other materials. Maintain necessary operating records. Assist in maintaining library collections and facilities, including selection of library materials for purchase and discard, processing of new materials, and light cleaning/tidying. Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answer phones, run errands, make arrangements for use of library facilities, set up tables and chairs for classes. Occasionally help with planning and presenting programs to the public. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to work with the public in a courteous, efficient, and professional manner. Verbal and written communication skills. Working knowledge of office practices and procedures. Ability to use basic office equipment. Dedication to maintaining confidentiality of library patron records. Knowledge of and ability to accurately maintain record keeping and filing systems. Must be proficient in a Windows environment. Have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Two (2) or more years of experience working in a professional office, providing public service, or previous library experience preferred.
• Other combination of education and experience which could provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid Alaska driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment and prior to operating a city-owned vehicle.
• Eligible to work in the US; requirement by Federal Law if hired must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9)
• Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing i.e. Criminal background and History and Drug Testing as defined by Alaska Statute 12.62.
• Employee will be required to work flexible hours on an on-call basis including weekends.
