Department of Public Utilities is accepting applications for the position of:  Heavy Equipment Mechanic-Powerhouse.  Position open for applications until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This position ensures the proper functioning of and performs routine and complex maintenance and repair work of the heavy equipment within the City’s Powerhouse. The incumbent reports to the Powerhouse Operator III (Powerhouse Supervisor).  The position serves as the supervisor for all power plant operations and is responsible for overseeing operation and maintenance of diesel and auxiliary equipment used in the generation of electricity. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Makes repairs and performs preventative maintenance on diesel powered equipment.  Reports defects and recommends improvements or alterations on powerhouse heavy equipment.  Repairs and maintains pneumatic drive equipment and all other equipment related to the power generation process.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:   Must be self-motivated.  Must have the ability and willingness to assure compliance with OSHA regulations and the standards for safety that have been set by the City of Unalaska.  Must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Must have the ability to learn and practice proper forklift operations.  Must have the ability to establish and maintain productive working relationship with the public, vendors, outside agencies, and City staff.  Must have the ability to effectively learn the City’s rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and terminology that is used in the Public Utilities Power Generation Division.  The ability to refer to and interpret manuals and contracts.  Knowledge of electrical theory, electrical generating processes, electrical and pneumatic controls, switchgear, and other equipment used in the generation and distribution of electrical power, and the ability to apply the knowledge in work situations.  The ability to work with high voltage equipment, to operate, maintain, and repair diesel equipment, and to detect operating defects or faults in mechanical and electrical equipment; the ability to operate a boom truck and forklift, and comply with all relevant regulations, rules, policies, and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  The minimum qualifications for this position are: high school diploma or GED certification, five years’ experience as a diesel mechanic and experience in the maintenance and repair of auxiliary equipment used in the generation of electricity.  The preferred qualifications of this position include vocational training in diesel or hydraulic repair, welding and fabrication experience and large bore diesel generation or other applicable technical training.  Other combinations of education and experience that could provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Valid Alaska CDL-Class A driver's license or ability to obtain is required. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.
