Position: Electic Lineman Apprentice
Wage: $32.85 / hour *1st yr Apprenticeship Program*
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the position of Electric Lineman Apprentice in the Public Utilities Department. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,500 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position functions as a Lineman Apprentice and is under the direct supervision of the Journeyman Lineman and Line Crew Chief. As an Apprentice and under supervision, this position is responsible for completing all studies deemed necessary to obtain a Journeyman Lineman Certificate of Fitness from the State of Alaska. This position assists the Utility Linemen in ensuring electrical service is delivered to the City of Unalaska consumers; installs and repairs electrical transmission, distribution lines and feeders through the system; performs necessary instrumentation and meter installations; measures, cuts bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit using such tools as hacksaws, pipe threaders, conduit benders and PCV heaters; performs cable splices and terminations on wire and cables up to 34,500 volts; tests continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard instruments; performs Substation maintenance; and performs electrical equipment grounds-keeping such as vegetation control and Right-of-Way clearing..
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Ability to learn and following standard of high voltage electrical line repair and maintenance safety practices. Must be able to understand verbal and written instructions and follow directions for job accomplishment and safety. Must be able to read and understand drawings and illustrations and operate as needed light duty equipment and tools. Clearly communicate with co-workers and supervisor. Ability to work under time constraints in potentially dangerous environments and time manage simultaneous tasks and projects with multiple deadlines.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must be able to obtain State of Alaska Journeyman Lineman’s Certification of Fitness six (6) months after the completion of four (4) year apprentice program.
LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska CDL Class B Operators license within 90 days from hire start; required to have clean driving record from the past three years.
Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing i.e. Criminal background and History and future periodic random drug testing.
Must be eligible to work in the US; requirements by Federal Law if hired must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9)
Ability to work occasional non-traditional hours
Ability to work in conditions that are inherent to all types of outdoor environments such as wind, dust, wet, cold, heat and snow.
Must be comfortable and able to work in a high noise and vibration environment and utilize materials such as paints and cleaners
Maintain active and current certifications and licensing for the duration of employment
BENEFITS:
Travel allowance $2,000 every year on your date of hire.
Moving Expense up to $5,000 plus one (1) way airfare including one (1) dependent (refer to IUOE for details)
Medical premium 100% employer paid (employee & dependents)
Paid Time Off starting at 8 hours per pay period.
Eligible for Public Employees Retirement System ( PERS)
Up to 100% Tuition Reimbursement (must be taken while employed; refer to Title III for details)
