 [Union Position Hiring range - Step 1-3]

The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Data Specialist I position in the Department of Public Works.  Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position provides administrative support and customer service for the Department of Public Works and Public Utilities under the office manager's direct supervision. Responsible for coordinating front office duties (utility locates and requests, excavation and building permits, Workers’ Compensation claims).  Tracks utility requests; posts DPW and DPW time cards daily to accrual sheet and prepares bi-monthly computerized timesheets for both departments.  Maintains and updates DPW/DPU databases.  Reconciles miscellaneous invoices and prepares PAs, LPOs, and MROs.  Reconciles “bill-out” work orders at month end. Reconciles and verifies employee leave bank and coordinates new hire orientation at the department level. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.  Must work effectively and establish and maintain productive working relationships with the public, Unalaska officials, and staff.   Must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills.  Ability to learn, understand, and apply multiple department procedures and tasks.  Must have the ability to maintain professionalism under pressure.  Knowledge of office practices and procedures.  Ability to use basic office equipment.  Knowledge of general record-keeping and filing systems.  Must be proficient in a Windows environment including Word, Excel, Outlook, and database software—ability to use multi-line phone system, VHF radio, and other office equipment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years of professional office experience.
  • Previous bookkeeping and timecard preparation experience in a public sector environment is preferred.
  • Other combinations of education and experience that could provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities listed will be evaluated individually.

LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have a valid US Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
