The Department of Public Safety is accepting applications for the position of: COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER. Position is open until filled.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position acts as an information source in emergency and non-emergency situations. Employee transmits, receives, and relays information concerning public safety and law enforcement activities.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Takes information, complaints, and calls for assistance from the public by telephone and initiates appropriate action. Solicits all necessary information from caller. Dispatch Police, Fire, and/or Emergency Medial and Marine Response Team service personnel as required. Prepare, review and maintain departmental documents, and maintain databases. Conduct computer research of State and Federal databases as requested by officers. Enter current information into Alaska Public Safety Information Network and verify accuracy. Monitor variety of emergency systems, security systems, local road closures, controlled burns, and fire and intrusion alarms. Provide clerical support and data retrieval for all divisions of Public Safety. Send Tsunami test and warning signals, road and traffic advisories. Perform related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of correct English usage and spelling. Knowledge of or ability to learn office practices and procedures and the use of office equipment and multi-line telephone system and multi-channel two-way radio. Knowledge of or ability to learn procedures and precedents for collecting, summarizing, and relating data which is highly confidential and/or sensitive. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information. Skill at typing 40 words per minute. Ability to learn access procedures and use of a variety of databases. The ability to deal effectively with persons of varied backgrounds. Must possess the ability to perform several tasks at once. Must be able to deal effectively with high stress situations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED. Knowledge of computers and basic office equipment. One (1) year of experience in work involving public contact and communication. Other combinations of education and experience that could provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees are required to work rotating shifts to provide 24-hour phone coverage. Occasional emergency or non-traditional work hours may be necessary. Firearms are present in the environment, and handling, but not operating, a gun may be necessary. Work environment requires frequent contact with non-cooperative, intoxicated and/or agitated people. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be subject to a thorough criminal investigation and successful completion of a pre-employment drug test. Must become certified in the use of State and Federal criminal justice information network systems, including APSIN, NCIC, and NLETS. Subject to one year probationary period.
