TSUNAMI EVACUATION

January 23, 2018, Unalaska, Alaska:  The community of Unalaska conducted a successful evacuation to safe ground as a result of the cooperation of the citizens of Unalaska. No injuries as a result of the evacuation have been reported. No wave action impacting Unalaska as a result of this tsunami warning is known at this time.

The Tsunami Warning Center issued its first Tsunami Warning at 12:35AM early January 23, 2018.

The local evacuation was initiated at 1:40AM, one hour before the anticipated first tsunami wave. In addition to tsunami sirens, this evacuation notice was communicated to residents with the help of KUCB, the Department of Public Safety personnel and volunteers, as well as the Ports Department Harbor Officers.

As a result of the winter weather conditions, City Hall and the Clinic were opened to provide temporary shelter for approximately 200 residents.

Once the City of Unalaska received conformation of the tsunami warning cancelation, an all-clear notice was shared with residents letting them know it was safe to return home at 3:30AM.

This experience serves as a reminder for all of us to be prepared for emergencies.

The Unalaska Department of Public Safety has partnered with Nixle to implement its Community Notification System to alert residents in real-time for localized emergency situations and relevant community advisories.
